Working Scientifically EYFS – Understanding of the world Cross-curricular links: STEAM Career Related Learning Clubs and PIE Challenge

‘Working scientifically’ is a statutory requirement of the National Curriculum for Science and underpins all of the teaching and learning opportunities that are provided across KS1 and KS2. We have built into our progression documents the aspects of working scientifically that will be taught in each year group within each area of science.

By linking the (often transferable) skills and vocabulary of ‘working scientifically’ to subject areas, we are ensuring that pupils are equipped with progressive, exciting and engaging opportunities to grow as practical scientists.

Pupils’ investigative and observational skills, data collecting and recording and evaluative methods are systematically built on across year groups and key stages.

It is of vital importance to us that pupils take ownership of their learning, that they are invested in finding answers to scientific questions. As such, pupils will be consistently offered opportunities to:

  • Pursue their own enquiries
  • Form scientific questions
  • Plan, lead, record and evaluate their own investigations
  • Provide their own answers and arguments, and reach conclusions.

Pupils’ collaborative skills will be developed through planned opportunities to cooperate and negotiate as part of a team.

At Reid Street, our overarching aim and intention is that through the delivery of our science curriculum, children have the opportunity to not only think like scientists, but also to be scientists.

One of the main driving ideas of our science curriculum design is that we continue to ensure that pupils at Reid Street are given opportunities to experience fascination, awe and wonder through hands on science experiments.

We welcome opportunities to complement our planned curriculum by inviting experts working in the field of science to engage with our pupils and to offer support, guidance and resources to our staff. Most recently, we have attended a virtual Mad Science Assembly hosted by the team at madsciencew.com, whilst pupils in upper KS2 have held interviews with ‘Science Explainers’ from the Life Science Centre.
