Curriculum & Progression

The Art progression documents have been created to ensure that incremental, progressive steps are taught over time to enable pupils to meet the end of Key Stage Attainment Targets of the National Curriculum whilst also providing a much broader, richer curriculum offer than these assessment statements cover.

The learning steps are sequenced in a spiral curriculum through each year group, with opportunities to recap and embed previous learning – this ensures that knowledge is retained and built upon, making learning ‘sticky’. The progression document will also include ‘aims and techniques’ as an overview of progression of skills for the pupils to develop each year. The specific (Tier 3) vocabulary linked to Art is built into the progression document; pupils are therefore able to understand this subject specific language within context and apply it beyond the subject where appropriate.

Art has many cross curricular links, but even when taught through a topic, there is a distinct Art thread – pupils will know which subject they are learning about.
